That looks comfortable.

It's Pansy.

Yarn, Legos and Food Storage, Oh My!

This Christmas was full of food storage items, crocheting and crafting supplies and lots of Legos.  Pretty fun stuff.  There has been plenty to keep the kids busy this week of vacation.  I also made everyone their own rice bag.  The microwave has never been used so much as it has this week.

We've had some kind of cold/aches around here, with my husband getting it the worst.  He's pretty miserable.  I was achy for a couple of days, but didn't get worse than that.

With the adults not feeling well and the kids busy playing, not much of the regular chores got done around here.  As my mom used to say, "This mess is a place."  Hopefully some progress will be made on that today.

We've been listening to lots of 80's music around here lately.  It's awesome.

113

About one year ago I started keeping track of what I read on the side of this blog.  I thought I'd go back and look at what it was that I read.

Total: 113 books (I think I forgot to put a few on there, so I didn't count those)

I read:

The Book of Mormon: 1 1/3

Classics: 3

Non-fiction: 20

Young Adult Fiction: 34

Adult Fiction: 55

I can see where I need to improve.  More classics and scriptures.  Although last year, I made it through the complete standard works by reading and listening, and I do have a bunch of classic books lined up on my nightstand waiting to be read.

Boy, I sure read a lot.

A Bowl of Dry Cereal Just Isn't the Same

I've been staying away from milk lately to see if my tummy issues improve at all.  I have to say that there has been MUCH improvement.  Which is too bad, since milk is my favorite thing to drink.  Oh, well.  It's better for everyone if I don't drink it.   ;)

It's a Wonderful Life

Every year around Christmas our family watches It's a Wonderful Life.  It's my favorite movie ever.  On another blog I found a link to an article that Jimmy Stewart wrote about making that movie.  I wanted to share that article, so here's the link:

Thanks to http://www.320sycamoreblog.com/ for the link.

It's a Cornmeal Mush Kind of Morning

We had cornmeal mush for breakfast this morning.  Quite tasty.  The chickens get any leftover hot cereal we have.  They'll be ecstatic, I'm sure.

We've had a weird stomach bug/cold/flu going around here.  I got it first, with headache, body aches, and tummy troubles, but never threw up.  Daughter #4 was next, with headache and cough.  Then came my Son with headache and lots of vomiting.  My Husband was after him with headache and nausea.  I hope we're over it.

I had my yearly physical last week.  Everything looks good.  I am adjusting my brain meds, so we'll see if my energy and motivation pick up.  Hope so.

So far, in the past month or so, we've taken about 6 or 7 loads of stuff to the D.I.

Mom's Trading Post continues to have great success.  I got 2 full kitchen garbage bags of stuff to donate and 3 bags to toss.

Our ward is doing a pioneer trek in June.  So for 3 days the youth and leaders get to walk around the west desert in pioneer clothes pushing and pulling handcarts.  Should be fun.

I got a new visiting teacher.  Someone I've never really met yet.  I know it was inspiration to assign her to me.  She said some things that really got me thinking.  Definitely an answer to prayer.

My husband and I went to the temple last night.  It had been a while since the last time.  It's time to recommit to go more often.

Some of the kids are learning to play the guitar.  It's cute to hear them strumming and tuning the strings.

I've been feeling lately that I need to do family history indexing again.

I'm very thankful for my blessings.

I love this time of year.

The Golden Ticket

"So many people today are waiting for their own golden ticket—the ticket that they believe holds the key to the happiness they have always dreamed about. For some, the golden ticket may be a perfect marriage; for others, a magazine-cover home or perhaps freedom from stress or worry.
There is nothing wrong with righteous yearnings—we hope and seek after things that are “virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy.” The problem comes when we put our happiness on hold as we wait for some future event—our golden ticket—to appear.

...The happiest people I know are not those who find their golden ticket; they are those who, while in pursuit of worthy goals, discover and treasure the beauty and sweetness of the everyday moments. They are the ones who, thread by daily thread, weave a tapestry of gratitude and wonder throughout their lives. These are they who are truly happy."

~Dieter F. Uchtdorf~

Simplify

“We women have a lot to learn about simplifying our lives. We have to decide what is important and then move along at a pace that is comfortable for us. We have to develop the maturity to stop trying to prove something. We have to learn to be content with what we are.”

Vacation

Sleeping in (sort of), hearing the high-pitched voices of girls' pretend play, eating cracked wheat for breakfast, not having the rush of getting kids off to school, and watching the progress of a Lego head dispenser being built.  The ideal vacation morning!

Birthday List

Daughter #4 wrote her birthday list a week or so ago.  Let's see if you can decipher it.  Here it is:

Daughter #4s Birthda List
1.  LOSE Of yorne.
2. a litol unbrla.
3. lose of Sckiney bltse.
4. Som barebes.
5.  noo School Ckoloose
6. Som Pant
7.  10 Packs Of gum gum.
8. 100 dolrs.
9.  A COOT

My favorites were numbers 4 and 9.  I laughed long and hard over this list.

Bedroom Cleaning Marathon

The kids and I just had a bedroom cleaning marathon.  I have a checklist for the kids to follow to make sure their room gets clean.  Much progress was made.

To encourage the kids to get rid of clutter, clothes that don't fit or they don't wear, and trash, I pay them anywhere from 1 cent to 50 cents per item.  Most of the kids earned $1.45 or more.  We got 4 trash bags full of stuff to take to the D.I.  I do let the kids buy things from each other if there is something they want.  Like clothes or toys.  Or the wooden chair that Daughter #1 made with her dad that Daughter #3 wanted.  This system has worked out pretty well.  There is way less crying this way than when I go through their things and force them to get rid of stuff.  I've learned.

Less

Lately I've been feeling like I need less in my life.
Less clutter.
Less chaos.
Less mess.
Less clothes that don't fit quite right.
Less shoes that hurt my feet.
Less things I don't use or love.
Less time-wasters.
Less stuff.
Less nonsense.

I went through my clothes and shoes yesterday.  I got 2 full garbage bags full to donate to the D.I.  I'll bet I can get another bag if I go through my closet and drawers again.  I just don't need shoes that give me blisters and clothes that mock me every time I look at them. (Most of those clothes and shoes were gotten at the D.I. anyway, so it's no great loss.)

I also went through my blog feeds list and got rid of about 2/3 of them.  They were fun to read, but I don't need to check them every day.

I've really been struck by some great quotes and scriptures lately:

"Have nothing in your homes that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful."
 ~William Morris~

2 Nephi 9:51 "Wherefore, do not spend money for that which is of no worth,
nor your labor for that which cannot satisfy...."

"The cause of most of man's unhappiness is sacrificing what he wants most for what he wants now."
~Gordon B. Hinckley~

I'm planning on going through every closet, box and cupboard in every room.

My house and life will be better when I am through with this goal.  I'm looking forward to it!

I Just Have To Say...

that 9 a.m. on school mornings is the best time ever.
that warm rice bags on cold feet are wonderful.
that I do not like calling people on the phone.
that the movie, You Again, is cute.
that I need to put away the clean laundry.
that I'm almost done with The Book of Mormon again.
that eating less carbohydrates is hard.
that I ran out of things to write.

A Blustery Day

I really love this kind of weather.  Windy, wet and cold outside.  Inside the house it's warm and cozy.  There are no tomatoes waiting for me to can them.  I've got a Ginger Spice Cake candle burning and it's so pleasant in here.

Last night's trick-or-treating was so easy.  I didn't have to do anything.  My husband took the three youngest out around the neightborhood.  Daughter #1 went out with her friends.  My son answered the door and handed out candy.  I was in my bed reading a book.  It was so nice.  That's the way to do it!

I let each kid choose 20 candies.  The rest will either go into food storage or be turned into our dentist's office for cash.  They will send the candy to the troops overseas.  I love that idea.

It's Mutual

Tonight was the combined YW and YM activity.  The YM were in charge.  The activity was a Halloween dance.  I've decided for the upteenth time that I do not like Halloween.  Or dances.  I dressed up in jeans, sweatshirt, bun and no makeup.  In other words, myself.  Which, because of this being PMS week, is pretty scary.  I went with a headache and left with a bigger headache.  It's pretty weird when your head starts throbbing to the beat of the music.  Not my finest night.

Boy.  This was an uplifting post.

You Rebel, You

I put all the rest of the tomatoes in the house out in the garden for the chickens to eat.  It was very freeing.

Laundry

Some days it seems like all I do is laundry.  This past week from Wednesday until Saturday night, the kids and I did 20 loads of laundry.  Here's the breakdown:

2 - Son's clothes
1 - Daughter #1's clothes
2 - Daughter #2's clothes
4 - Daughters #3 and #4's clothes
2 - Husband's colored clothes
1 -  Husband's white clothes
2 - My colored clothes
1 - My white clothes
2 - White towels
1 - Other towels and rags
1 - Tableclothes
1 - Kitchen rags

No wonder I get tired of laundry sometimes!  We normally do 14-16 loads a week.  The three oldest kids do their own laundry, which certainly helps.  I got a bit behind on laundry with all the garden and canning stuff.  It's good to be caught up again.

Daughter #2

Daughter #2 will be having a birthday next week.  She will be 10.  In preparation for her birthday, she has written a list of things she wants.  Here it is:

As you can see from her list, she is into crocheting lately.  Here is something she and Daughter #1 made for her horse, Truffle:

And one last picture.  Here is what happens to toast after Daughter #2 gets done with it:

We sure love ya, Daughter #2!!!

In Queue

I'm so glad Heavenly Father staggered the harvest time of fruits and vegetables.  Can you imagine if all the peaches, tomatoes, pears, etc. all came ripe the same week?  Arghhh!

I've got the last of the peaches and the first of the pears in the dehydrator, the turkey carcass from yesterday's dinner is cooking on the stove to make stock, a load of dishes is washing in the dishwasher and I took out a gross garbage.  I'm making progress.

I got contacts two weeks ago.  I think I'm finally getting used to them.

I LOVE fall time.

I'm listening to Michael Jackson on Pandora right now.

Now it's Tears for Fears.

Can you tell what decade I grew up in?

Food Storage

So far,

10 pints or so of peach freezer jam
6 quarts of canned crushed tomatoes
8 1/2 pints of canned salsa
4 quarts of frozen spaghetti sauce
9 quarts of canned peaches
12 1/2 pints of canned peach jam
2 quarts of canned dilly beans
2 full dehydrators of peaches
and
6 quarts of spaghetti sauce that got tossed.

All of that was done in the last 2 1/2 weeks except the freezer jam.  No wonder the kitchen is a mess!

Awesome Quote

INTERRUPTIONS

"When you are exasperated by interruptions, try to remember that their very frequency may indicate the value of your life. Only people who are full of help and strength are burdened by other persons' needs. The interruptions which we chafe at are the credentials of our indispensability. The greatest condemnation that anybody could incur - and it is a danger to guard against - is to be so independent, so unhelpful, that nobody ever interrupts us, and we are left comfortably alone."

Canning Lesson #3

Jam that gets cooked on the burner will take the finish off the glass top.  The stove doesn't have a sweet tooth, I guess.

Canning Lesson #2

When making peach jam, always use a bigger pot than you think you'll need.  If you don't do this, your jam will overflow out of the almost-big-enough pot and all over the burner, counter, cupboards and floor.  Burning jam stinks and fills the house with smoke.

Canning Lesson #1

Make sure you have enough fruit pectin for making canned peach jam.  Not doing this will make you stop what you are doing and run to the store so you can finish the jam.

I Think I Can, I Think I Can

I just did a produce swap with my in-laws.  It was awesome.  I gave them all the picked tomatoes (there are a lot more still in the garden), a few potatoes and 8 or so peppers.  In return I got 2 more small boxes of peaches to add to the 3 boxes they gave us last night.  Now instead of tomatoes coming out of our ears, we have peaches!  I'm going to can the nicer-looking ones and jam and dehydrate the not-so-cute ones.  I think I'll be busy for a few days with these.  More work, but at least they're not tomatoes!!

Random

Right now I am eating my lunch:  leftover pasta bake, a hard-boiled egg, a whole tomato, an apple and a glass of milk.  Yummy.

I just came in from weeding.  I weeded for 2 hours and 40 minutes today and finished up what I couldn't yesterday.  I weeded for 3 hours yesterday.  That tells how bad the weeds were.

The salsa I made and canned on Friday is very tasty.

I like to eat alone.

Stacking firewood is fun.

The sound of airplanes droning is a sleepy sound.

Weeding is satisfying.  Especially those morning glories.

I had at least 4 weird dreams last night and remembered them enough to tell my husband about them this morning.

I like being here by myself.

We have a lot of tomatoes.

I found a dead mouse while weeding.  Gross.

I just finished reading Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens.  I recommend it.

My pasta is getting cold.  I'd better finish it.

Busted

You know those 6 quarts of pasta sauce I made last week?  Well, I don't know if I filled the jars too full or the jars weren't freezable, but every one of them cracked in the freezer.  Rather than try to save the sauce and take a chance of glass shards being in the sauce, we just tossed the whole lot.  Luckily for me, our garden is still producing tomatoes at a too-rapid rate, so I'll get another chance to make sauce this week.  This time I'll can it or use plastic freezer containers.  Lesson learned.

Alone Time

I realized I haven't posted how having all the kids in school is going.  As my husband likes to say, it's delicious, delightful and delovely.

In other words,

AWESOME!!!

Down to Two

Yesterday I was able to use more than 100 tomatoes to make spaghetti sauce, so we are down to 2 giant bowls of tomatoes instead of 4.  We're making progress.  After having pasta and sauce for dinner, we were left with 6 quarts of sauce to freeze.  It was a most-of-the-day process and made quite the mess, but was worth it to use so many tomatoes.  Next up, salsa.

Now, what to do with all those summer squash!

New Record!

We have a new record for the number of tomatoes picked in one day at our house!!!

106

There were 48 Romas and 58 regular tomatoes.  Plus we still have about 100 in the kitchen from a few days ago.  Overwhelmed, anyone?

Monday, August 29, 2011

88 + 22 =

Yikes!!!!

That's how many tomatoes we currently have in the house.  I just picked 88 tomatoes a few minutes ago and we had 22 that were ripening in the kitchen.  This is getting out of hand!

Getting Ready

Right now the three youngest are supposed to be getting ready for school.  Daughter #4 is brushing her hair.  Daughter #3 is brushing her teeth.  Daughter #2 is lying on the carpet watching a sow bug crawl across the floor.  Typical Daughter #2 behavior.  Good thing she's already done with her teeth and hair!

Out the Ears

All but 5 of these tomatoes were picked today.  This isn't showing the greenish ones that had fallen off or were picked too early.  There are 11 of those.  I think it's time to make spaghetti sauce tonight.

Curses, Foiled Again

This morning has started out rough.  My husband forgot his computer and has to drive back home from work in Springville to pick it up, Daughters #2 and #3 have colds and one has a fever and will be staying home from school, and we're out of bread.  It will be tortilla sandwiches for lunch today.  So much for a first day home alone while all the kids are in school.  Oh, well, there's always tomorrow.

Good, Better, Best

Tomorrow I have Daughter #1 in school for 7th grade day.  Tuesday, all the kids but Daughter #1 start school.  Wednesday, all the kids are in school.  Hooray!

Released

Our Young Womens' presidency is being released today at church.  Bring out the tissues!  I knew this was coming, but it still isn't any easier.  We had our last presidency meeting on Friday and all four of us were weepy.  It's been 5 months of learning and growing for me.  I've had the feeling that I wasn't done serving in Young Womens, though.  I didn't know if it was wishful thinking or inspiration.  It was both, I think.  I got a new calling as a Beehive advisor, so I will work in the same class I was in before, but won't have the responsibilities of a presidency member.  I made it out to the parking lot before the tears came.  I'm grateful for this new calling and the continued opportunity to serve the Young Women.

In a Pear Tree

Here's the breakdown of school clothes and such bought this year so far:

9 pairs of shoes(including 1 pair of flip flops)

8 pairs of jeans

5 shirts

5 packs of socks

4 packs of undies

3 backpacks

2 pairs of leggings

2 pairs of shorts

2 swimsuits

1 pack of earrings

and

1 jacket

We haven't even started on the school supplies yet.  That'll be next week after we get lists from the teachers.

Paying for school clothes and shoes for 5 kids:  Blech

Having all 5 kids in school all day 5 days a week:  Priceless

What???

I went walking this morning with my dad.  We're doing well getting together once a week to walk and catch up on our lives.  We went 30 minutes this morning around the ward and neighborhoods.

Later this morning I had the urge to go out walking/running again.  So I went for 40 minutes around the junior high school track.  What is wrong with me?  I've never done that before.  I also find myself thinking about jogging more often than I probably have to.  Boy oh boy, this is weird.  ;)

Running...... again

Well, I survived running this morning.  We did Week 4 of the Couch to 5K program, which is 5 minutes brisk walking for the warm-up, 3 minutes jogging, 90 seconds walking, 5 minutes jogging, 3 minutes walking, 3 minutes jogging, 90 seconds walking, 5 minutes jogging and 5 minutes brisk walking for the cool-down.  I was able to do about 3/4 of the jogging or more, plus running to catch up to my group when they were walking.  All in all, I ran more than I ever have up to this point.  Not too shabby.  I did stop to pet 3 horses on the way, but it was during the cool-down walk, so it's okay!

Can't Sleep

I'm having a hard time sleeping this morning.  I bet it's because I have to be up at 7 to go running with the Young Women and the leaders.  Not really looking forward to that, but I'll be so glad I went after I'm done.

Back to school.  That's one of my favorite phrases.  Ever.  We've been spending this week so far getting everything ready for school.  Yesterday I took my son to get his clothes and supplies.  He needed pretty much everything as far as clothes and shoes went.  I tried to go as long as possible during the summer without buying him new pants and shoes because he's growing so fast.  I didn't want to have to shop twice.  Well, it was getting pretty desperate.  He had not a single pair of appropriate long pants left and his toes were hanging out his shoes.  It was definitely time.  He is now properly outfitted.

Then I took all four girls to get their hair cut at Fantastic Sams.  I'm willing to pay for their haircuts so I don't have to mess with their hair.  I'm afraid of messing it up.  I cut my son's hair and my husband cuts his own with my help, but the girls' hair is just too thick.  All the girls look much better and I bet we won't be having hour-long combing sessions anymore.  I hope.

After that, Daughter #1 and I went to get her clothes and to get her ears pierced.  She looks so cute with her earrings.  She has been sensitive to metal in the past, so we'll cross our fingers with this and hope she doesn't react.  She got some cute animal earrings as well.

I still have to go through the youngest three girls' clothes to see what needs to be bought.  I know we'll be getting long pants and shoes for all of them.  That situation is pretty bad.

We have Back-to-School nights on Thursday and Friday this week.  Those are very helpful and the kids look forward to seeing who is in their classes.  Daughter #1 will learn how to open her locker and how to navigate the maze that is the junior high school.  My son said it's not too bad, so we'll see how she does.

Also this week we have a car wash with the YM and YW tonight, a YW presidency meeting for me on Wednesday morning, a late night for the YW on Thursday, and camping for my son on Friday and Saturday.  It's good to be busy.

Girls' Camp - The Longer Version

Sunday night I couldn't get to sleep.  No surprise there.  I finally fell asleep at 2 a.m.  My alarm went off at 5 a.m., since we had to be at our Stake Center at 6 a.m. to board the buses.  It would have been later, but there was a mix-up with scheduling the buses.  Daughter #1 and I packed our lunches and loaded the van.  We had to pick up our Young Women's president and her daughter on the way to the Stake Center.  My husband drove us there and dropped us all off.  Boy, was it early.

The buses finally came, we boarded and were off.  Our Young Women's president and I were the 2 adults on our bus.  Immediately the camp song singing began.  And didn't stop for the entire week.  I am camp-songed out.  We got to Heber Valley Camp at around 7:30 a.m.  After stepping off the bus, we were immediately swarmed by mosquitos.  That also would not stop for the rest of the week.  Bug spray was whipped out as soon as we got to our campsite.  Most of our other leaders were already there setting up camp.  We just had to grab our things and put them in our bunks.  By the time we were done with that, it was 8:30, but felt like lunch time.  It was going to be a long day.

The 5th and 6th year girls were called YCL's (Youth Camp Leaders) and were so awesome.  Their job was to take the lead in most group activities and help organize the girls.  They did a great job of it the whole week.  We were divided up into cabin groups, with 2-4 leaders per cabin and about 8-11 girls in each cabin.  Our cabin was the fullest with 4 leaders and 11 girls.  9 of the 10 leaders had a daughter at camp and they were kept together in cabins with the rest of the girls divided up the best way possible.

We had our ward orientation and then the stake orientation with the senior missionaries assigned to the campground.  We learned what to do about storms and bears and everything in between.  The storm info would be very important, as it would rain 3 of the 4 nights there.  We never saw a bear, but did see bear poop on our hike, right on the trail.

Every morning and evening we had stake devotional at the amphitheater, or at the pavilion when it rained.  Monday night was Family Home Evening.  The parents of the girls and husbands of the leaders had written a "Once Upon a Time" story of the birth of the girls and meeting of the husbands and wives.  We had a short lesson and got to read those stories.  It was neat.  We each had a camp journal and each day were given a writing prompt to complete.  Those journals were used a lot for different activities.  The girls also made a time capsule to be opened before they attend the temple.  They would work on those throughout the week.  We had had hot chocolate and donuts in the rain for refreshments.

Also on Monday, 2 other leaders and I went to the ropes challenge course to be trained on how to teach the girls on the course the next day.  Tuesday afternoon we all went down to the ropes course.  There were 7 different low ropes challenges, each requiring different strengths and problem-solving skills.  My challenge was called Shark-Infested Water.  The point was to get everyone from the "sinking ship" to the safety of the tiny island by way of a rope hanging halfway in between without touching the ground.  It was about 10 feet between the rope and the ship and island on each side.  4 teams of girls went through.  It was very interesting to see how the different teams worked together.  Only 1 team got everyone across the first time.  It was Daughter #1's team.  It helped that the majority of the girls on that team were thin and shorter.  One team in particular had some heavy girls and never did complete the challenge.

There was also a high ropes course, which consisted of having to climb about 40 feet up a telephone pole using hand and feet grips, walking across a 40-foot wire to a platform and going down the zipline to get to the end.  The whole time you were strapped to a rope that went through a metal ring with men holding the end of the rope.  It was very safe.  And scary for some people.  I went up and didn't really struggle until the zipline.  My stomach didn't like it very much.

3 of our leaders are very scared of heights and were hesitant to do it.  They all did it, as well as all the girls.  Another of our leaders had a brain bleed (like a stroke) some years back and has almost no use of her left side.  She was very active before that happened and it was frustrating for her to not be able to do all that everyone did.  Two years ago, she was able to do the zipline by being hooked up at the end of it and being brought back to the beginning and let go, but had never done the first parts of the challenge.  She decided to try it with the help of the men on the end of the rope doing most of the work.  I have never seen someone so determined to do something.  Or struggle so hard to do it.  She got turned around at one point on the pole and one of the volunteers climbed up behind her and helped place her feet the rest of the challenge.  The girls were so great to cheer her on constantly and at one point sang "I am a Child of God" to her.  I cried the entire time.  It was seriously life-changing to watch.  It made me realize that I give up easily when things are even a little bit hard.  I let fear stop me from having many experiences.  I have never really had to work hard for anything.  Not like she did.  She was able to complete the whole challenge and later said that she had never felt Heavenly Father's love like she did at that time.  It was truly inspiring and something none of us will forget.  It was my favorite experience of Girls' Camp.

Tuesday night we had skits with the stake.  It rained hard, so we met in the pavilion to watch them.  The girls had had the whole day to work on the skits, and all the wards did a great job.  Our ward did the best, of course!  Even the stake presidency did a skit.  I've heard it is the most looked-forward to of all of them.  During the middle of the skits, a mother moose with baby in tow walked right in the middle of the campground.  Lucky for us, we were in the pavilion and not walking around the campground, or it might have been too exciting.

Wednesday was hike day.  We could choose the long hike, which was 6 1/2 miles, or the short hike, which was 2 1/2 miles.  Long story short, I ended up doing the short hike.  Both hikes were strenuous and challenged those who went.

I was starting to feel the fatigue setting in.  I had gotten 3 hours of sleep on Monday night and 1 hour on Tuesday.  That's only 7 hours in the previous 3 days.  Not enough, even for me.  Wednesday night I took a couple of Ibuprofen for aching legs and slept the entire night without waking up once.  I must have been exhausted, because that rarely happens even at home.  I also learned that I snort in my sleep.

Wednesday night was the faith walk.  It was a very spiritual experience.  It talked about our time in the premortal existance and how it will be when we return to our Heavenly Father.  We got to see ourselves the way He sees us.  I was a leader of group #3, but got to participate in everything.  It was very neat.

Thursday was lake day.  We hiked about 1 1/2 miles to the lake for canoeing and lunch and hiked back.  Definitely an easier hike than the day before, but still got us breathing hard.  Showers were after the lake and we made fabric-decorated flip flops and did manicures and hair.  It was the most downtime we'd had so far.  The bishopric and wives came up that evening for testimony meeting.  It was an emotional evening for everyone.  I started crying during devotional with the stake and didn't stop the whole evening.  It was neat.

Friday morning we packed up and loaded the trailer and trucks.  We cleaned the cabins and campground and had inspection by the senior missionaries.  After waiting for the buses for a while, we finally got on board the bus and went back to the stake center.  The girls sang camp songs that entire ride.  It was a long ride.  Getting home was so wonderful.  After a long shower, I crashed and took a lovely nap.  Our ward arranges for the YW leaders to have dinner brought to their families the night they get home from camp, so I didn't have to cook.  I don't think I could have if I wanted to.  I was bushed.  It was such a great week.  I still feel a bit tired from everything, but am so glad I was able to go.  It was a wonderful experience.

I Survived!...... Mostly!

Well, we got back from Girls' Camp yesterday in one piece.  It was a great week, with lots of laughing, crying, mosquitos, camp songs, not sleeping, deer, skits, potguts, moose, flies, good food, hiking, canoeing, bug spray, weird tan lines, testimonies, manicures, crafts, rain, screaming about bugs, cold showers, mud, awesome girls and leaders, and hard beds.  I'm very grateful I was able to go.  I'll write a longer post later.

Hi Ho, Hi Ho...

It's off to Girls' Camp we go!

This should be a great week.  Daughter #1 and I are very excited this morning, even at 5:31.  We've got our backpacks packed, our "Be True to the Who(Wonder Heavenly Offspring) t-shirts on and our pillows ready for the bus.  This will be great!

Run Like the Wind?

One of our Young Women leaders is organizing a 5K run for us to do in September.  Since the majority of those participating are not runners, we are meeting weekly to run/walk to practice for the 5K.  I have never been a regular exerciser, so I knew this wouldn't be easy.  This morning was our first time to practice.  Yikes.  I was given the assignment to bring up the rear to make sure no one was left behind.  That was the perfect job for me, as I was quite a bit behind already.  I know I'm not in shape, but really?  We'll see how this goes.

Daughter #1 joined our group this morning and did really well.  I'm very pleased she is doing this with me.  Well, way ahead of me, really!

Overheard

"Mom, did you know that when you are laying down and you hit your tummy, if it is hard then you are hungry and if it is jiggly then you are not hungry?"

Hmmmmm.  Thanks, Daughter #4.  I wondered why I was NOT hungry all the time!  ;)

Motivation

Life is meant to be enjoyed, not endured.” ~President Gordon B. Hinckley ~

You pile up enough tomorrows, and you'll find you've collected a lot of empty yesterdays.” ~ Harold Hill~

If you delay till to-morrow what ought to be done to-day, you overcharge the morrow with a burden which belongs not to it. You load the wheels of time, and prevent it from carrying you along smoothly. He who every morning plans the transactions of the day, and follows out the plan, carries on a thread which will guide him through the labyrinth of the most busy life. The orderly arrangement of his time is like a ray of light which darts itself through all his affairs. But where no plan is laid, where the disposal of time is surrendered merely to the chance of incidents, all things lie huddled together in one chaos, which admits neither of distribution nor review.” ~ Hugh Blair ~

A life lived in fear is a life half-lived.” ~Fran~

You do not find the happy life – you make it.” ~President Thomas S. Monson ~

Fear of change keeps the individual from seeing problems as they truly are and from creating effective ways to solve them. It seems much easier to rely on the old familiar but nonproductive ways than to risk creating new ways to cope with recurring problem situations.” ~Jonathan M. Chamberlain~

Carpe Diem. Seize the day.

Wherefore, the Lord God gave unto man that he should act for himself....” 2 Nephi 2:16

Remember that fear always lurks behind perfectionism. Confronting your fears and allowing yourself the right to be human can, paradoxically, make you a far happier and more productive person.” ~Dr. David M. Burns~

Those who act, win; those who react, lose.” ~Morgan Wootten~

Acting involves making a choice. Reacting means someone else is making the choices.” ~Tim Kopperud~

Only I can change my life. No one can do it for me.” ~Carol Burnett~

Don't be too timid and squeamish about your actions. All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make, the better.” ~Ralph Waldo Emerson~

Allergy Eye and Clover

One of my eyes is red and itching like crazy from something in the air.  Why the other eye isn't joining in the fun is a mystery.

For our Beehive class activity tonight we went to meet a new Beehive that was supposed to move in yesterday.  Instead, we met her father and learned that their furniture won't arrive from Connecticut until Saturday, so they aren't moved in yet.  So we ended up going to the park down the street.  The girls made clover chains and played grass tag and basically acted like 12 and 13-year olds.  Very entertaining.

There is a thunderstorm going on tonight, which explains why my aching legs are keeping me awake.  Silly legs.

Our AC is lovely.

We had a fun 4th of July spent with family.  Get-togethers are always great fun.

In 3 weeks, Daughter #1 and I will be at Girls' Camp.  I'm getting quite excited.  It should be a great experience for the girls and the leaders.  We have some awesome people in this ward.

I'm still mostly sane this summer vacation, but am very much looking forward to school starting back up next month.  All the kids in school all day?  Yes, please!

85

That is how hot it is in this house right now.   Even with a fan blowing directly on my face, I can't seem to fall asleep.  Maybe a bowl of corn squares with honey, blueberries and milk will help.  And reading blogs.  That always works.

The Beehives were in charge of the combined YW/YM activity tonight.  Which means I was in charge.  Being in charge of things like that is not my favorite thing.  It went well, I think.  I'm glad I'm done being in charge for a while.  Hopefully.

We are getting a new AC and furnace on Thursday and Friday.  Happy day!

Pansy the broody chicken is still broody.  She's back in the broody cage.

We are getting peas and strawberries from our garden.  And the dill has nearly taken command of the entire garden.

It is hot.

Balderdash is a very fun game.

I'm out of things to type.

Yum

For breakfast this morning I had Multigrain Cheerios, cold milk and strawberries that 10 minutes before were still on the plants out in the backyard.  A breakfast of champions, think I.

AC

It is currently 72 degrees outside and 84 degrees inside the house.  I think something is wrong here....

We had our air conditioner looked at today.  It is beyond repair, the poor thing.  We will now be replacing both the air conditioner and the furnace, since they are both 15 years old and one of the two doesn't work and the other will probably quit in the near future.  We are all looking forward to some cooler temperatures in this house.

Happy Father's Day

I thought I'd share some things about my husband I'm grateful for on this Father's Day.

I'm grateful he arranged for the kids to go to Grandma's for 5 days.  It's been awesome.

I'm grateful he works hard to provide for our family and so we can be independent.

I'm grateful he knows how to install new toilets.

I'm grateful he insisted we get chickens.

I'm grateful he is into preparedness and getting our food storage ready.

I'm grateful he laughs at my corniness.

I'm grateful he takes the kids swimming without me.

I'm grateful he reminds us to have family prayer and scripture study.

I'm grateful he can draw and teach the kids art.

I'm grateful he can play the guitar.

I'm grateful he likes to garden.

I'm grateful he can take me to the temple.

I'm grateful we are sealed for eternity.

I'm grateful we just celebrated 15 years of marriage.

I'm grateful he taught me how to shoot firearms.

I'm grateful he is patient with my housekeeping skills (or lack of, sometimes).

I'm grateful he enjoys cooking and is very good at it.

I'm grateful he loves me.

I love you, hon.  Happy Father's Day!!!
