radKIDS tidbit

One thing I've learned while teaching radKIDS at the school is that with the 1st graders, you have to be very specific as to what you want them to do.  We were practicing peppering to the eyes and then turn and run in place as if you were running away and I said "and then run" and forgot to say "in place", so of course 32 kids go running across the gym.  Only 4 kids stayed put.  Running in place is not a new concept.  We use this all the time.  But they heard what I said and not what I meant, so they ran.  I'm still learning to be a good teacher.

10 More Things

Way back in February I posted a list of ten things people may or may not know about me.  I thought I'd do another ten things:

11.  I am not a morning person.  It takes me a good long time for my brain to gain momentum and for me to get used to the thought of getting up each morning.  I usually have to lay in the bed for a while, then sit up for a few minutes and then I can get up out of the bed.  Then I pace around the house opening blinds and saying silly things to the kids.  After about 15 minutes of this, I can function mostly normally.  Well, as normal as I get, anyway.

12.  When reading a book, I am always aware of when I reach page 100.  I don't do that with any other page number.  Not sure why I do that.

13.  I love old books.  I love the smell of them, the feel of the pages, etc.  I especially like books with inscriptions or names written in the front cover and old library card envelopes on the back cover.

14.  I can not eat raisins.  I can eat dried cranberries, which are very similarly textured, so it must be the taste.

15.  I do not like eating in public.  I'll do it, but it is uncomfortable.  Especially bad for me are places I'm expected to visit with others while eating, i.e. church activities.  And we have our ward Christmas dinner tonight.  Goody.

16.  I like guns.

17.  I never did like bath time for the kids.  Someone always ended up crying and I ended up wet and mad.  It's awesome that the four oldest can shower themselves and the youngest needs minimal help.

18.  I cry very easily.  Not fun.

19.  My favorite animals are wolves, horses and owls.

20.  I can teach children with not too much nervousness, but teaching adults sends me into my-heart-is-racing-so-fast,-it-can't-be-good-for-me mode.  Plus I get overly emotional (see #18).
